This page "Diversity Notices" highlights barriers to involvement of those who are not of the dominant class. This page is intended to provide brief suggestions for future wiki editors and other organizers. For discussion of content on this page, see it's "discussion" page.

TravelCoordination For example DebConf18/TravelCoordination and DayTrip planning

Issues

  • In general women are not advised to publically post location data. Women are advised to not travel alone. Travel buddy systems that post full names give women these choices: Withholding their own gendered parts of names, flags them as probably female. Removing all names or posting only a nickname make them less able to coordinate with others. Many will choose not to use such a system. --Delib (talk) 19:46, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Suggested Improvements

  • On top, a notice about issues and the purpose of the page (to reduce social pressure): Use this page if you are ok that other people will contact you to share the travel (and eventually sharing taxi expenses) to/from DebConf and ev. a warning: Be aware that this page is public (to all world), and about possible harassment (which is never tolerated on Debian community, see CoC). Then A Guide on Travel Coordination, which make aware people about the issue (and also the privacy issue), but also offer hints about how to use the system efficiently (e.g. passively), about alternate (and safer) channels. A significant part should be about first time attendees (which have possibly a smaller circle of debconf contacts). This guide should be useable also for mini-debconfs and BSPs. I propose to organize a BOF at DebConf (so we have fresh impressions) to start to write it (or a guide about women attending Debian events, which could cover much more topics). --Cate (talk) 07:22, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
  • It may be a general crime issue. Some destination countries may need a full crime warning for all genders. Some countries none at all. Jidanni (talk) 16:48, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Consider leaving unassigned seats in busses or etc., in case some interested participants might not want to post their sign-up information publically.

Humour as a barrier to involvement

Issues

  • Humour decreases tension and helps bonding when people experience common (enjoyable) emotional responses together. Sometimes the humour helps people bond by insulting a class of "others" who are not them. Humour against "others" also helps people identify themselves as a group with something in common. They are not those others. In this case, the brunts of the joke will experience a hurdle to involvement, that the joke-makers have put in their way. It also warns people not to identify themselves with the brunts of those jokes.
