[edit] DebConf PriorityList

Taken and expanded from PriorityList.

[edit] "affordable" for both sponsors and attendees

Riga bid has an option of using hostels for accommodation, this would be one of the most affordable accommodation options since Debconf in Edinburgh. The food costs are reasonably low in Riga. Riga airport is a hop away from central European airports, that is the only point that is less affordable than another location might have been.

[edit] strong, mature, experienced local team

The local team consists of 7 volunteers and 2 more helpers have stepped up, there was not a significant call for help issued to the local community. Of the local team 5 people have experience in organising conferences and other events for at least 100 people.

[edit] Experience in organizing DebConfs

Only aigarius has had any experience in helping the organisiers of previous Debconfs.

[edit] Willingness to work on Debconf 12 stuff

In a similar way to the Swiss team, while some of the team members are willing to join the DebConf (global) team for DebConf 12, we don't think it's the task of the next DebConf team to finish the work left behind by the previous team :-) Therefore we're only willing to do work that also benefits DebConf 13. But we are commited to not leave behind unfinished work after Debconf 13 for the next Debconf team either.

[edit] Team work

The bid has deliberately been a work of a few people with specified areas of responsibility - leot handled the venue and food, eugene handled the day trip activity planning and aigarius handed the rest of the planing details including the accommodation, budget draft and the write-up of the bid wiki articles.

[edit] good working spaces

Latvian University venue has a large number of classrooms with sizes from 20 to 100 people that can be used for work during the conference

[edit] excellent network connectivity

2 redundant 10 Gbit/s optical connections are available to us in the venue and it is already fully wired and has wireless connectivity thought the venue.

[edit] quality and quantity of food and drink in close proximity

2 meal sper day are included in the basement of the venue, breakfast is included in the accomodation options.

Other than that there is a large number of bars, restaurants, pubs and fast food within easy walking distance of the venue.

[edit] suitable accommodation in close proximity

Within 1 km of the venue there several dozen of hotels and hostels, including the hotel option and the hostel option included in the bid.

[edit] presentation facilities

All are available and included in the venue. The video team is likely to need their own cabling as usual.

[edit] travel logistics

Riga airport RIX is well connected to mayor airport hubs in Europe and a bus from the airport arrives within few hundred meters from the venue (even closer to the accommodation options)

[edit] accessibility

Venue is verified to be accessible by wheelchair, so is the hotel option, but not the hostels. For travel from airport and for daytrip and formal diner a special taxi will have to be used.

Accessibility to blind people unfortunately is minimal, I would expect that help would be needed there.

[edit] weak points of the Latvian bid

  • relatively small and Debconf-inexperienced team
  • hotel option is quite expensive, while hostel option could be shadier that Debconf is used to in the last few years
  • Riga airport coverage by cheap airlines is not too good
  • bus factor is strong in the local team

[edit] strong points of the Swiss bid

  • Less distractions for attendees during the event
  • Strong local team with extensive teamwork
  • much more likely to get significant local sponsors
