DebConf18/Bids/Hsinchu
Hsinchu City originated in 1692. After hundreds of years, the city has a fusion of modern and traditional Chinese culture, and is a land of high technology. Many IT companies are located in HsinChu, such as MediaTek, RealTek, TMSC, DLink, etc. Thus, there are many local engineers and developers of software and hardware. It is a great opportunity to introduce Debian, free software and open source philosophy to the local developers and engineers if DebConf18 happens at HsinChu.
If you are a Chinese culture fan, there are famous temples in this city, such as the Chenghuang and Bamboo lotus temples. There are also many historical buildings such as city hall, the railway station, and the traditional castle gate. You can also enjoy local tasty traditional food here. The location at HsinChu is convenient for going to other Taiwan cities like Taipei or Taichung.
In this wiki, we use NTD:USD = 1:0.032 exchange rate for any price in NTD.

[edit] Why HsinChu
[edit] Rich and Diverse Open Source Communities
There are many free and open source communities in Taiwan. This is a good chance to introduce them to the global community of Debian.
Some of the free and open source communities in Taiwan are listed below:
- debian.org.tw
- Debian Taiwan is a community formed by Taiwan Debian users. The goal of this community is to provide a better environment to contribute to Debian.
- g0v.tw
- LXDE / LXQt
- LXDE and LXQt are two related desktop environments based on GTK and Qt. The goal of these desktop environments are to provide lightweight desktop environments. The founder of this project Hong Jen Yee, aka PCMan (Chinese web page) lives in Taiwan [2].
- Mozilla Taiwan Community
- Mozilla Taiwan Community (Chinese web page) is an open source community founded in Sep., 2004. The goals of this community are to promote open culture, preserve people's right to choose, and to make a better internet.
- ocf.tw
- Open Culture Foundation or ocf.tw (Chinese web page) is a organization founded in June, 2014. The goal of this organization is to promote any kind of open culture, including open source, open standard, open hardware, open data, and open system. Since ocf.tw is registered as a non-profit organization, many other communities can use ocf.tw as a proxy to receive donations.
- SLAT
- Software Liberty Association Taiwan or SLAT.org (Chinese web page) is an NGO/NPO founded Apr. 8, 2001. The target of SLAT is to promote FLOSS, to serve free software communities, and finally to build a healthy FLOSS ecosystem.
- Since 2001 SLAT has been collecting and promoting good public domain resources for education. Since late 2014, SLAT has helped the NDC (National Development Council) in Taiwan to promote the national standard CNS15251 (based on ODF 1.2 draft) and has gained huge progress. Since 2015, SLAT has advocated for the "Software Liberty Movement". Their goal is to introduce the culture and spirit of free and open source software. Explaining how free and open source helps governments, enterprises and people liberate from the bonds of commercial software.
- TOSSUG
- the Taipei Open Source Software User Group or TOSSUG is a group of people who live, study or work around Taipei and love to use, promote, or write Free and/or Open Source Software.
- WoFOSS
- Women in Free and Open Source Software in Taiwan or WoFOSS (Chinese web page) is formed by female free and open source contributors. Their goal is to create better environments for women to learn, improve skills, and contribute to free and open source projects.
[edit] Regular, Local, and Large Open Source Conference Experience
In Taiwan, there are at least three large scale (around 1000 attendees) open source events taking place every year. That means some communities are experienced at managing large scale events. We have three large conferences annually, and large hackathons (over 500 attendees) every month.
The following are some of the events held by open source communities.
- COSCUP
- MiniDebConf
- We had the following Mini DebConf in 2009, 2012, and 2013.
[edit] CJKV Localization
- Due to the complexity of CJKV character input (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese), localizations are challenging tasks (input method modules). Unfortunately, developers from outside east Asia do not know about the difficulty, and the large demands from local users to improve CJKV localization. Thus, DebConf will be a good chance for non-CJKV people to understand CJKV environments and challenges. We hope we can gather more developers to improve the CJKV environment in Debian.

[edit] Airline Transportation Information
Air travel is recommended as Taiwan is an island. The international airport (TPE) is located in Taoyuan city. There are direct flights from at least the major international airports of Frankfurt (FRA), Amsterdam (AMS), Los Angeles (LAX) and London (LHR), as well as the bigger airports in Asia, including Japan. Connections from other parts of the world go via Beijing (PEK), Hong Kong (HKG), Shanghai (PVG), etc.
