[edit] Introduction

This page is the Debconf10 Contribution Brainstorm page, a place where you can add your ideas for things you would like to see at Debconf, or you can get ideas for things that you could contribute that someone else has indicated their interest in seeing happen.

This page is for you to participate in, feel free to edit and add things, this is a brainstorm.

[edit] What is a Brainstorm?

The point of this page is to brainstorm ideas, this means you should: add as many ideas as you can think of, without restraint; extend and add to ideas that are already here. You should not criticise other's ideas (or your own), withhold that for now. The point is to suspend judgment for now, so we can encourages unusual ideas. Put whatever you can think of here, as many as you like. Build on, and add to other ideas that are here, but don't remove things or make comments about what you think of things that have been put here. Assessment will happen later.

[edit] What can I put here?

Anything. Be creative, be wild, be unsanitary, be anonymous, don't censor yourself, maybe use some swear words, fuck yeah! Lets get this party started!

[edit] Let the brainstorm begin!

Some loose ideas for possible things that could be put here, don't feel constrained by these categories, add a new one!

talk ideas:

track ideas:

  • d-i
  • QA
  • Python
  • Perl
  • Debian Social Organization (lists, irc, keeping people moving smoothly, NM, ...)
  • ftpmaster/package archive/licencing/
  • release
  • Debian Deployments (e.g. "how we used Debian in this situation"/large scale deployments/in schools/)
  • Packaging tools (debhelpr, VCSs, ...)
  • Debian Infrastructure (lists, alioth, buildd, ...)
  • Security
  • embedded
  • java
  • mobile
  • desktop
  • multimedia
  • non-linux/ports
  • science
  • Debian community outreach
  • Poster Session/Day -- scientists apparently do this at conferences, where people produce a poster about some research and having it hung at the conference's Poster Session counts as publication -- it was suggested that doing this would allow some people to get their institutions to cover expenses, and it might well allow the shy among us (of which we have many) to spread their ideas to a wider audience -- the posters might also be suitable as part of Debian Day.

Regarding the Science track, would it be possible to allow talks from scientists who develop and maintain their software within Debian? They would not necessarily talk about Debian _per se_ but could give a talk about the software they develop in Debian GNU/Linux. Of course, it would be of interest if they would explaining why they have chosen Debian GNU/Linux for their development. I think of this, because this is precisely my situation: I am a biochemist who has developed for more than ten years a software program for mass spectrometry of biopolymers. It would be very interesting *for me* to show its features at a DebConf talk in the Science track (gaining awareness and new users/advocates). But then, would *people* feel interested in such an approach? I am certainly not alone in this case. What do you all think?

i'm dying to learn something that I know Debian people know / would love to see a tutorial on...

I have an idea for a debate between two people...

I think it would be really fun to show a film, or see a performance, or demonstration of...

Show-off your tricked-out environment! Got an awesome awesome setup? Maybe your emacs/vim goes to 11, lets see it!

Wall of appreciation, where people can put up notes about people in Debian who they appreciate the work that they do, or have done.

Poster Session -- scientists apparently do this at conferences, where people produce a poster about some research and having it hung at the conference's Poster Day/Session counts as publication -- it was suggested that doing this would allow some people to get their institutions to cover expenses, and it might well allow the shy among us (of which we have many) to spread their ideas to a wider audience -- the posters might also be suitable as part of Debian Day

I would love to see an on-going BSP. This would be a coordinated area where people would gather to work on squashing RC bugs. If you were in this area, you are working on killing RC bugs. There would be a running tally kept throughout all of Debconf (maybe someone would sound a klaxon horn everytime a bug was squashed?), someone could help dish out bugs to people who needed them, there could be tutorials/workshops about bug squashing too (from beginning to advanced).

Lightning talks on topics not related to Debian or tangentially related.

Events for spouses/children of DebConf go-ers

There are musicians and other audible artists amongst us. Some space/time for jamming would be cool. Remember the Organ in Edinburgh? and stuff like: http://hammurabi.acc.umu.se/pub/debian-meetings/2007/debconf7/low/243_Jam_session.ogg

It would be very beneficial to have the Python situation hammered out in debate, discussion and working sessions.
