[edit] Want to help?

Please email BOTH Wouter Verhelst, wouter@debian.org AND CC mvandenborre@fosdem.org if you would like to help with video streaming FOSDEM 2012. Also, it's useful if you subscribe to video@lists.fosdem.org, so we can contact you easily if needed.

  • IRC: irc.freenode.net, #fosdem , Wouter: Yoe, Mark: markvandenborre
  • phone (emergencies only please): Wouter: +32 486 836 198 , Mark: +32 486 961726.

Thanks for volunteering!

[edit] General setup

We'll cover 5 rooms. Each room will have:

  • One camera
  • One twinpact 100, for screencapturing
  • An audio mixing console
  • A laptop running dvswitch, on which a director can choose between streaming either the video or the screen

There will also be several microphones in the room; one for the speaker, and a number for people to ask questions. These will be wired (boom) mics in some rooms, and wireless handheld mics in others. Handling these (passing them around, keeping track of where they are) should probably be the responsibility of the moderator, not of the video team.

[edit] Network

  • 193.191.80.1X = janson = r1grab (.10), r1dvswitch (.11)
  • ... .2X = ferrer = r2grab (.20), r2dvswitch (.21)
  • .3X = k = r3grab (.30), r3dvswitch (.31)
  • .4X = h1301 = r4grab (.40), r4dvswitch (.41)
  • .5X = h1302 = r5grab (.50), r5dvswitch (.51)
  • 193.191.81.11 = flumo1 (janson and h1302)
  • 193.191.81.12 = flumo2 (k auditorium and h.1301)
  • 193.191.81.13 = flumo3 / celtic () <= flumotion does not want to work here
  • 193.191.81.14 = ? (ferrer)
  • gateway: 193.191.95.254
  • netmask: 255.255.240.0
  • the range 193.191.85.1 -> 193.191.95.254 is handed out by DHCP; do not use static IPs in this range.
  • No DNS server is known to us at this time; we currently use 8.8.8.8 (this may change).

[edit] Hardware rundown

  • 10 computers: 6 from Debian, 4 are rented and will be installed on thursday by Wouter.
  • 5 twinpacts two from Debian, 3 were bought by FOSDEM)
  • 5 cameras 4 belong to IRILL, 1 owned by Wouter
  • Microphones: 6 wired were borrowed by Wouter, one wireless borrowed by Wouter. Several wireless owned by Debian, some wireless headsets owned by Debian, some wireless headsets owned by ULB
  • Mixing consoles: two owned by Debian, one borrowed by Wouter, two rented.

The rental laptops have asset tags by the rental company, which have a unique number. Since some of the laptops will be used for different purposes, here's the rundown:

  • 48318: desktop install, speaker laptop for lighting talks room (not for video team)
  • 48320: desktop install, infodesk 1 (not for video team)
  • 48306: desktop install, infodesk 2 (not for video team)
  • 48298: dvswitch fai installation
  • 48326: dvswitch fai installation
  • 48324: dvswitch fai installation
  • 48308: dvswitch fai installation
  • 48319: basic installation, to be used for transcoding & streaming
  • 48322: basic installation, to be used for transcoding & streaming

Wouter owns two more machines (one laptop and one desktop) that will also be used for transcoding & streaming

[edit] Software

running squeeze(?) and dvswitch. There will be transcoding done on some of the spare rented laptops, these require flumotion to be installed

[edit] People & Shifts

If you've not worked with dvswitch before, please show up for the first talk on the schedule (the opening talk), so we can give you an introduction on how everything works. It's not difficult!

Note also that some rooms are pretty far away from one another. Ferrer is in the H building, as are the two cross-distributions rooms (H.1301 and H.1302). Janson is right next to the H building, but that's about a five-minute walk. The K building is across the parking lot from Janson, which is probably about 15 minutes away (though I haven't timed it). Don't expect to be able to help out for one talk in H.1302, immediately followed by a second talk in K.1.105!

There are three roles:

  1. Director: this person chooses which stream (camera or computer slides) will go "live" over the stream
  2. Cameraman: operates the camera. Just make sure the person speaking is in the frame all the time, and that the camera isn't wobbling too much.
  3. Audio: operates the mixing console. It will have been preset somewhat, just needs someone to move the volume of the microphones when they're not in use (and back up when they are, or when the speaker is talking too quietly, or some such).

If you've not worked with dvswitch before and you can't make it to our training session during the welcome talk, I recommend that you limit yourself to work as camera man or audio person.

[edit] Friday

Set-up of our gear. If you can make it and you've worked with dvswitch before, please come help us out!

Ferrer is the lightning talks room. Since it makes no sense to swap video team members every 20 minutes, we'll group talks per three so that Ferrer has one-hour shifts instead of silly 20-minute shifts

[edit] Sunday

Coordinating through the wiki was a major FAIL yesterday. Therefore, we're not doing it today anymore.

Any video volunteers, please join #fosdem-video on OFTC. We'll coordinate through there: ask for replacement, yell about technical issues, etc

Sorry 'bout the mess.
